Baptism

Baptism is an ancient ritual that symbolizes a change in the direction of one’s life. Christian baptism, in particular, is a public declaration of a person’s decision to give the rest of his or her life to Jesus, to stop living by their own values and desires and to start living by His values and desires. In baptism, the old, self-centered life is symbolically buried and the new, Jesus-centered life is raised up.

When do baptisms take place?

We are excited to include baptisms on any Sunday during our worship gathering. Many want close friends and family to be there for this significant event, so we'll work with you to find the best date.

How do baptisms happen at Greater Portland?

GPBC has a baptism tank built into the back wall of the auditorium stage. We practice full-immersion baptism, meaning you go completely under the water and back up again. Someone, usually a pastor, relative or other spiritual mentor, is in the tank with you, baptizing you in front of the Greater Portland faith community. Each baptism includes a confession of faith by the person being baptized...responding to questions similar to this, "Do you believe that Jesus is God himself? And do you believe that when he died on the cross he paid the penalty for your own sin? And is it your intent to follow him the rest of your life?"

Next Steps

Jesus commanded all Christians to be baptized as evidence of their decision to follow Him. If you would like to be baptized, please contact one of our pastors or the church office.
